JLE @ PISA JAZZ INSTABILE FESTIVAL Nov 2006
All About Jazz Italia

LIVE at Bruno's, San Francisco 2006
Lurie’s saxes blend neo-bop, funk, World, acid and other contemporary stylings in a rugged modern tone akin to Michael Brecker and Kenny Garrett.

MUSICOLOGI, Paolo Bomben, Italy Nov . 2005
American musician Jessica Lurie has a rich, artistic vein. In last night's concert, Lurie "limited" herself to playing alto sax, flute, percussion, singing and manipulating her electronic effects... she refuses to be limited by language or style when approaching the music and atmosphere of songs, be it Sicilian dialect, deep grooves, or combinations of sound that reflect the heat of the American south. What resonates strongly is that she performs all of these styles without ever losing her personality; Lurie has succeeded in imprinting herself on these various genres and not the other way around.

HATS OFF TO JESSICA LURIE,

High Sierra Music Festival July 2005
Whether doing James Brown proud with the UK's New Mastersounds or stompin' a brass hole in the sky with Skerik's Syncopated Taint Septet, saxophonist Jessica Lurie ... lived up to her stated goal of creating "joyful music chaos." Whenever Lurie popped on stage, things jumped to the proverbial next level. Physically petite but possessing a big, bold sound, she blows with a seemingly endless inspiration that recalls Joe Henderson with the flexibility of Wayne Shorter. Dennis Cook, Jambase

SAN FRANCISCO BAY GUARDIAN, 2004
With her feet planted in solid jazz technique and her head buoyed by a free-flowing jam-band sensibility, Seattle's Jessica Lurie is a natural draw for open-minded fans of both genres. On both sax and flute Lurie can sustain impressively rich, compelling solos that stretch deep into Eastern European and post-bop melodic influences while remaining fundamentally groove-oriented.

I walked into a packed house enthralled by the sonic excitement bursting from the stage. Avant-garde jazz saxophonist Lurie was tearing it up with her band mates: Nels Cline on guitar ,tupright bassist Todd Sickafoose, drummer, Scott Amendola. Lurie and her companions were able to move from what at times sounded like musical chaos into a super cool groove and back again, but never the same thing twice. They were fearless, in the moment and able to pull fantastic musical ideas from the atmosphere and from each other.

Bumbershoot Int'l Music Festival, 2003

One of the hardest-working saxophonists in Seattle plays jazz that loops, sails, and soars without ever losing the listener. An enormously prolific and talented composer, Lurie's works are both groundbreaking and addictive. CHRIS DeLAURENTI

Jessica Lurie A flame-throwing saxophonist who can sustain long solo flights better than just about anyone in town .MARK D. FEFER

Jazz Review, LA Times, 2002"

The Jessica Lurie Ensemble …compelling, stylistically eclectic jazz… an exhilarating display of the unheralded but impressive music that is being made--in Seattle and beyond--by adventurous young artists." Don Heckman,

LA WEEKLY 2002

While she's not afraid to get her hair in a tangle, this Seattle bandleader puts the accent on melody and the remote-control imperative that drives the tapping of your helpless toe. Also Sat. Greg Burk

San Francisco Bay Guardian, 2002 Critics' choices:

Seattle alto saxophonist – flutist Jessica Lurie teases out other aspects of her myriad talents –which include singing and wordless vocalizing - in the Jessica Lurie Ensemble. Lurie's original compositions tap Bulgarian and other Eastern European themes to create bridges between postbop jazz and the groove-orientation of the jam band circuit."
Derk Richardson

Village Voice, Voice Choices, 2002

"Saxophonist Jessica Lurie's a fire-breathing tightrope walker"
